Dear Emmys; maybe i’ve been too hard on you. Maybe you are right not to nominate Community for ANYTHING this year over comedy shows like Glee, The Big C, Parks & Recreation, Big Bang Theory, The Office, 30 Rock, and Modern Family. Such shows, as well as everything else that got the big nomms are undoubtably more deserving in every way. This is why.
- Community is innovative. Who the hells wants innovation when you could get more of the same? I don’t want to see my sitcom characters turn into claymation, pull guns on each other at least once a season, fight zombies, become zombies, dress as pulp fiction characters while having deep philosophical discussions, and generally run amock. That just makes for bad TV. I’d rather watch my characters go on generic adventures.
- Community is smart, and everybody knows that hyper intelligent sitcoms that challenge the structure of what a comedy is while bombing us with rapid fire jokes and epic continuity is just way too much for the average public to appreciate. Look at Arrested Development. I don’t watch my TV because I want to do hard things like THINKING and PAYING ATTENTION. That’s just too much work!
- Community spits in the face of every other show nominated, so why should it be included? We can’t praise the quality of other TV shows when one of them regularly points out sitcom faults, tropes, and fuck ups? How are we supposed to enjoy how great Parks and Modern Family after Community’s mockumentery episode? How are we supposed to enjoy Glee after Community pushed their entire Glee club off a cliff? When a show challenges the tropes of of the entire comedy genre, it poses a severe risk of ruining it for everybody. The show is just way too cynical.
seriously i love me some parks & rec, bbt, the office etc but i do love community too and THIS IS ALL SO ACCURATE
